Barbara was born with a paralysis in her left leg and arm, a condition that causes a slight limp in her stride and prevents her from raising her arm much higher than her shoulder. This is a handicap that shouldn't prevent anyone from leading a full and productive life, but this isn't her only handicap. All of her life, Barb has been protected and sheltered by her mother, and at age 36 she still lives at home. She often seems child-like, not childish like most adults in this world, but innocent. She comes across as a dim bulb, but she's not stupid. She lacks self confidence and, since she rarely makes her own decisions, she's often confused when one has to be made.
